In 480BC during the Battle of Thermopylae Sparta's King Leonidas I led a vastly outnumbered force of Spartans against King Xerxes Persian forces. Believing that Leonidas would throw down his weapons and surrender if the opportunity was given, Xerxes sent a messenger to the roughly 300 Spartans that stood against his force of more than 300,000. The messenger told the Spartans that King Xerxes demanded that the Spartans throw down their weapons. King Leonidas screamed back, "Molon Labe!" which means, "Come and get them!".
